Yeah but as always they have to implement it a year to late (with all the complexities that come to merge the list).
This should have been there from the start of origin.

Well, I think the Origin friends merging is a good step. Never understood why they were separate.

Ow yeah i meant, something went wrong when they try to merge the friends lists. so they disabled the merging for now until they can fix it (and start updating again :'( )

They changed the message to:
"We're currently looking into issues with the Origin friends list and game launching. If you are unable to join games after the patch: Right click BF3 in Origin and choose “Repair install” to fix the problem. "
